Withdrawal of the popular former WEC Featherweight Champion left slot open on main card to air on Versus on August 18th
After an injury during training forced former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber out of his Bantamweight debut fight against Takeya Mizugaki on the main card of next month's WEC 50, the promotion has announced that a Lightweight bout between former IFL star Bart Palaszewski and undefeated prospect Zack Micklewright will be bumped to the main card, which will air live on Versus. The fight had previously been scheduled for the night's untelevised preliminary card.
Micklewright made his WEC debut at WEC 45 where he scored a unanimous decision victory over Muhsin Corbbrey to run his unblemished record to 10-0, but was forced out of his next bout at WEC 48 against Alex Karalexis when he suffered a broken ankle in the training camp leading up to the bout. Prior to his victory over Corbbrey, Micklewright had been on a streak of three straight bouts finished with punches (2 TKO's, 1 submission).
After starting his WEC career with a pedestrian 1-2 run, Palaszewski has since won back-to-back fights against Anthony Pettis (via split decision at WEC 45) and Karen Darabedyan (submission at WEC 47), giving "Bartimus" a three-fight winning streak when a victory over Tyler Combs at an XFO event in October of 2009 is also factored in.
WEC 50 will take place on August 18th at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV and will see WEC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz defending his title in the main event against top contender Joseph Benavidez in a rematch of their August 2009 bout won by Cruz via unanimous decision. Also on the card will be a Lightweight bout between Shane Roller and Anthony Pettis with the winner expected to move into the WEC's Lightweight Championship contenders mix.
